Morgan Simon on Finance for Social Justice

Impact investment is a trillion-dollar trend on the rise. Yet, the average person often struggles to understand how he or she can participate in using financial capital as a tool for social change. How do you begin to align your money to your values if you don’t have large amounts of your own money to invest?

This course will offer clear strategies and tools for how investors, community leaders, social entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens alike can begin to align their financial capital with their social values, building upon Morgan’s close to 20 years experience influencing over $150B, and expertise supporting families, foundations, institutions and activists who want to align their money and values.

Through personal stories and examples, she’ll demonstrate how anyone can leverage their assets (or the assets of the institutions they do business with) to promote social justice and create value for communities. She’ll introduce the “Transofrm Finance” framework so that anyone can begin to make sense of the field. You’ll get an opportunity to begin defining your own impact and financial strategies and then evaluate potential investments against these criteria.

This course will offer clear strategies and tools for how investors, community leaders, social entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens alike can begin to align their financial capital with their social values. It builds upon Morgan’s book, Real Impact, which you can read alongside the videos to gain even deeper insights.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand the intersection of social justice and finance
  • Define impact investing and consider some of the current trends and debates
  • Map your own financial assets and analyze the institutions where you place your money
  • Use the Transformative Finance principles to evaluate investment opportunities
  • Understand the financial tools available to institutions and individuals that can be used to further social justice
  • Begin to align your own money to your social values
