Nearly every day, I encounter clinicians, teachers, and parents who are desperately seeking answers for how to help children overcome “challenging behaviors.”

And I understand the frustration… the sad truth is that the traditional strategies we have for helping children are failing.

Time-out rooms, behavior chart consequences, and other methods that focus on correcting behaviors aren’t working for the simple reason that they don’t take into consideration the reasons underlying behavioral challenges: the child’s individual differences and the state of the child’s nervous system.

Each child has a unique background, different strengths and challenges, and are at different points in their development. They require customized plans, rooted in science, that are specific to their needs.

That’s why I’m excited to invite you to join me and learn a new and MUCH more effective approach to helping children and their caregivers…

…one that leverages the neuroscience of development and Polyvagal Theory insights that have been grossly underused in supporting children and families.

Through six practical, step-by-step modules filled with real-life case samples, you’ll learn:

  • How to work with children of any background or developmental stage, including those who’ve experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with a disorder.
  • How to easily use Polyvagal Theory insights to understand and change behaviors.
  • How to use both top-down AND bottom-up methods to effectively engage children in the way that’s catered to their needs.
  • What to do in moments where behaviors get big and out of hand.
  • And so much more!

Whether you work directly with children, or you’re helping a client caregiver who’s feeling inadequate, this course is for you!

Course Schedule

Module 1
Why Our Current Behavioral Approaches Miss the Mark & Fail our Kids
Using the latest neuroscience of development research, Dr. Mona Delahooke will introduce why we need to focus on development and ability as keys to success for children.
Module 2
A New Way of Understanding Behavioral Problems
Dr. Mona Delahooke dives deep into the scientific research to set the foundation for an approach that recognizes where behaviors come from – and shows you how to leverage that insight to help children succeed. You’ll learn:
  • 3 different pieces to understanding child development.
  • 4 main categories of causes underneath the “waterline” of visible behaviors.
  • How to use neuroception to understand if children are feeling safe or in danger.
Module 3
Underneath & Beyond Behaviors – Learning the Language of a Child’s Nervous System
In this module, get a roadmap to understanding the language of our nervous system and its key insight to understanding behaviors. Using Polyvagal Theory interventions, you’ll be able to help children find the calmness and safety that are essential to healthy development. And most importantly, you’ll learn how to leverage your own presence as a key resource to helping children embody self-regulation so they can take control of emotions and behaviors.
Module 4
The Six Key Processes of Social & Emotional Development & DIR Therapy
This session was specifically designed to help you understand the important context of a child’s behaviors, so you’ll know exactly where to aim your efforts to help them. After viewing this module, you’ll be able to assess your own processes and determine if the child you’re working with requires top-down or bottom-up support to thrive.
Module 5
Nervous System-Based Techniques for Behavioral Change, Part 1
At the heart of helping children succeed is teaching them how to talk about their feelings, get help when they need it, and be able to calm themselves compassionately and appropriately. While most models start from the top-down, this session offers effective ways to work from the body up to the brain to help children overcome challenging behaviors. Once you’re able to build capacities instead of assuming children have them… really good things happen!
Module 6
Nervous System-Based Techniques for Behavioral Change, Part 2
Finally, you’ll master the top-down approaches that will help the child to fully grow and thrive. You’ll get critical insight into working with special populations, including children with trauma, ASD, and neurodiversity. You’ll also learn de-escalation strategies to use when behaviors get big and out of hand. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to focus on the relationship with the child instead of the behaviors.
